Lorenzo Frignani Liutaio

Luigi Mozzani

Born in Faenza on 9 March 1869, Mozzani studied the guitar at the Bologna Conservatory of Music. He went to become renowned as a guitar virtuoso and composer. He also worked together with various orchestras.

In 1910 he opened a Luthery Workshop in Cento (Province of Bologna) where he constructed guitars, mandolins and lyres, further to which he moved to Bologna. Mozzani developed an innovate and patented system for his guitars. The particuliarity of these instruments which are known as ‘Lyre Guitars’ is that the arm and keyboard can be regulated via screws. This reduces the effort made by the player’s left hand. In 1942 Mozzani opened a School of Luthery in Rovereto which was his last. Indeed, on 12 August of the subsequent year he died.
